Protection Order Reform Implementation
Prior to the enactment of RCW 7.105, there were separate laws governing Washington's six civil protection orders - Domestic Violence, Vulnerable Adult, Anti-harassment, Sexual Assault, Stalking and Extreme Risk. RCW 7.105 codifies these orders and their proceedings in a single chapter, reconciling inconsistencies that created complexity, produced barriers to access, and limited available relief by the courts. This session will provide a basic overview of the new civil protection order statute addressing legislative intent, definitions, jurisdiction/venue, proceedings, and remedies.

The Art & Science of Persuasion: Unlocking the Power of Women to Advance Progress For All
With our democracy and fundamental rights on the line, the stakes are incredibly high this election year and beyond. There are millions of women—not committed to either party—in rural, small town, and suburban America who want progress on things like access to healthcare and reproductive choice, but whose civic impact does not reliably reflect those goals. Learn how Galvanize Action is working at the intersection of data science, behavioral psychology, and neuroscience to develop messages that are proven to move moderate women toward progress, and leave this workshop with concrete tools to apply their values-based messaging strategies to your work in Washington State.

Cultural Placement Assessment in Domestic Violence Survivor Advocacy
Come learn about the Cultural Placement Assessment approach developed by Mother Nation. This approach was designed especially for Native American survivors, and survivors experiencing multi-abuse trauma, drugs and alcohol, and historical trauma. Participants complete a guided self-inventory during the recovery and healing process. They are able to see what areas they want to grow in and change. Since this sometimes leads participants to question who they are, the process also helps them to define their purpose and allows the advocate to support healthy healing decisions for their life choices.

Mother Nation is a non-profit organization offering cultural services, advocacy, mentorship and homeless prevention services to celebrate and inspire the success of Native American women and families. The design of each program is to honor the beauty and strength of Native American culture, spirituality and values built on the ancestral strength of each participant. Mother Nation is committed to always providing culturally based traditional teachings throughout all service areas. Our goal is to ensure healing and wellness with cultural resilience offering quality service to those desiring healing from historical and intergenerational trauma.

Mother Nation’s Yeha:wi (“she’s holding her sacred”) Service Center provides mobile advocacy services to adult Native American homeless women experiencing multi-abuse trauma. Advocates work with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, Indian Child Welfare (child protection cases), and in recovery from drugs and alcohol. All Yeha:wi Team members provide culturally based and survivor centered advocacy to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and commercial sexual exploitation. Advocates also support Spirit Journey House residents. Participants in need of cultural healing services can be referred to Mother Nation’s Cultural Services Team and Yeha:wi healing circles during their transition to new beginnings. All Mother Nation participants have ongoing full access to the spiritual support needed with guidance from our team of Elders.

Evidence that the Domestic Violence Housing First Model Impacts Survivors
Did you know that some of the most important research on domestic violence survivor advocacy has been happening with your peers in Washington state? Come be among the first in the nation to learn about the ground-breaking findings of the Domestic Violence Housing First study, and what it means for survivors and their children, for services, and for our movement. If you've ever wondered how we can truly stabilize families experiencing violence, and reduce further violence, this workshop is for you!

Dr. Cris Sullivan and Linda Olsen will present the findings from the Domestic Violence Housing First (DVHF) Demonstration Evaluation, which followed survivors over two years after they sought services from domestic violence programs at several WSCADV member programs in rural and urban communities. Cris will share the impact of the DVHF model on survivors' safety, housing stability, mental health and quality of life over time as well as how the model made a difference in the lives of BIPOC survivors and survivors in different circumstances.

This workshop will be useful for everyone but directors, housing managers, shelter advocates, economic justice advocates are especially encouraged to attend.

Resilience and Connection
Katelyn will be introducing somatics as a methodology to account for the impact of trauma and oppression in our bodies and to introduce new ways of working with that impact through the body. Goals are for participants to:
  • Revitalize practices of resilience that support us to face the ongoing challenges of our collective world
  • Focus on how to recover from burnout and build skills toward sustainable healing practices
  • Bear witness to a group of peers in their own healing and transformation
  • Cultivate body-centered practices for deepening into mutual connection, deep emotions, resilience
In this work, we frame institutional and structural oppression (including racism, sexism, homophobia, classism and ableism) as forms of trauma. This practice acknowledges the deep historical impacts of colonization, slavery, and continued systemic inequity on brown and black bodies, as well as other marginalized communities. We use somatics as a body-based healing methodology to help us transform trauma and oppression through our bodies to help us re-cultivate safety, dignity and connection.

We'll be building practices around our individual and collective leadership to help sustain and embolden our lives and work together and tools to help us take sustained action towards systemic transformation. Because this is a body-based methodology, there are some activities that involve making physical contact with one another. While your full participation is encouraged, everyone has full choice and consent within this workshop and non-contact alternatives will be offered.

Reproductive Justice as Survivor Justice: Advocacy and Messaging Strategies to Support Reproductive Freedom for All
Survivors are safest when they have the freedom to write their own futures. Reproductive and bodily freedom have always been central to our movements against domestic violence. This year’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade erodes the protections that survivors need to find safety and freedom. But together, we will continue our work to create a world where all people can live and love freely, without fear.

This workshop will offer participants grounding in a reproductive justice framework as an approach for disrupting gender-based violence, identify strategies for supporting reproductive justice, healthcare, and abortion access with survivors, and explore effective messaging for talking about reproductive rights and abortion with our communities, boards, and supporters.
